Best AI girlfriend for voice and phone calls: which ones actually pick up?
Most apps sell voice messages and let you call them calls. Which ones do a real live call, what a minute costs, and where the voice is worth paying for.

- guide
A good AI voice does not read text out loud. It breathes, it hesitates, it pauses before an awkward line, it drops half an octave when the subject changes. That is the whole gap between a screen reader and something you would actually put in your ear.
Here is the part nobody spells out first: most apps advertising “voice” ship voice messages, not calls. Those are two different products at two very different prices.
In short
- Nomi is the only app here with unlimited live voice calls on every paid tier, from $8.33 a month on annual.
- Kupid AI has the most believable voice in the category and does not do live calls at all. Voice messages only, metered in weekly minutes.
- Kindroid bundles voice calls into one subscription with no separate currency, but charges you before you can hear anything.
- FantasyGF charges 30 tokens a minute of calling on a 100-token monthly allowance. That is three minutes a month.
- Watch the label: JOI AI does live video calls, not voice calls, at 2,000 Neurons per five minutes.
Voice message or voice call: the difference nobody spells out
A voice message is a rendered audio clip. You send text, the app sends back a file, you press play. A live call is a continuous spoken exchange with latency you can feel.
Sorting our reviews by what each app actually declares, ten support live voice calls: Nomi, Kindroid, Character.AI, Replika, FantasyGF, Promptchan, FlirtCam, Secrets AI, Nectar AI and Secret Desires AI. The rest stop at messages, including Candy.ai, OurDream AI, Nastia AI, JuicyChat AI and, most surprisingly, Kupid AI.
Two edge cases worth flagging. SpicyChat has no voice feature as such: its top tier at $23.95 adds text-to-speech on the character’s replies, which is a read-aloud button, not a conversation. And Infatuated.AI lists only voice messages, yet its published token grid prices a “voice call” at 5 tokens. Check that one on your own account before you plan around it.
What makes an AI voice believable
The mechanism is less mystical than the marketing implies, and Kupid AI’s is the clearest to describe. The text generator embeds emotional stage directions inside the message before the audio engine ever sees it: (whispering), (laughing playfully), (sounding a little tired). The voice model reads those tags and adjusts pitch, breathing and delivery speed accordingly.
So a reply might exist internally as (laughing playfully) I missed you today before it becomes sound. That is a genuinely well-built pipeline. It is also not a companion reacting to your day. It is a text generator picking a stage direction and a voice model obeying it.
Worth holding onto, because voice is the single most convincing part of the illusion. Reading a flat reply, you stay aware you are reading a model. Hearing one sigh, you stop noticing.
Kupid AI: the best voice in the comparison, and not a single call
Kupid AI built its entire reputation on audio that does not sound synthesized, and it holds up. Pacing that breathes, a hesitation before a sensitive line, a tone shift mid-message. Nothing else we have tested sounds this close to a person.
The catch is not quality. It is the shopkeeping.
There is no monthly plan. Billing runs weekly: $12.99 for Pro, $24.99 for Ultra. Next to a monthly figure that reads harmless, and over a year it is roughly $675. The same Pro plan costs $179 on annual billing, about $3.44 a week. Same product, nearly four times the price, decided by which button you click at signup.
Voice itself is quotaed: 12 voice minutes a week on Pro, 35 on Ultra, alongside 25 photos and 8 videos on Pro. Past the quota you buy coins. Memory is capped at the last 30 messages on Pro and 100 on Ultra, while the same pricing page markets its Lifetime plan as “she remembers everything”. Read the table, not the tagline.
One more thing before you count on judging it free: Kupid’s own comparison table lists the free tier as one character, 15 messages total, no photos and no voice. Confirm that on the live page before you assume you can audition the product for nothing.
Nomi: unlimited voice calls, on a character that remembers you
Nomi’s V3 voice engine landed in 2026 and puts laughter, sighs and breathing directly into the audio. It is built in-house rather than licensed, and the first few minutes are genuinely unsettling. An optional ElevenLabs integration exists for custom voices, but it runs on your own separate ElevenLabs subscription, so budget for that only if you want it.
The commercial part is what actually separates it. Every paid tier unlocks the same set: unlimited messaging, unlimited voice calls, up to 10 companions, group chats, the full memory system, unfiltered adult content. Nothing is held back for a higher price, which makes the $99.99 annual plan (about $8.33 a month) a straight discount instead of an upsell.
Pair that with the memory. In our four-day memory test across six apps, Nomi was the only one that recalled all three planted details without the character sliding into assistant voice. A voice that sounds present is one thing. A voice that remembers what you said last month is a different product entirely.
The free tier gives you one companion, a capped daily message count and no voice at all. It tells you whether the writing suits you. It does not let you hear the thing you would be paying for.
When you actually wanted a video call
Two apps in our reviews put a face on the call, and neither is a voice product.
JOI AI runs live video calls, badged in pink on the character cards. The rate is 2,000 Neurons for five minutes, on a $17.77 monthly plan, which works out to roughly $36 at the pricier end of the top-up packs reviewers report. The free tier tops out around 210 Neurons, so it does not cover one call.

Independent testing has not been kind. One reviewer who paid to test a call called the video “laggy, lip-sync was off”, the whole thing “jittery and awkward” and “far too expensive for the poor quality you get”. Another found the feature still labelled beta inside the product, and the session billed in full even when ended early.
FlirtCam is the better-built version of the same idea, because the call is the product rather than an add-on. Your companion appears on screen in a simulated call with expressions and reactions, and written chat becomes the accessory. The operator is EU-registered (DevPro s.r.o., Nitra, Slovakia), which matters if jurisdiction does. Two honest limits: past roughly 45 minutes the expression vocabulary starts looping, and on the free tier anything intimate stays blurred behind a lock icon.

If video is what you came for, our AI cam comparison goes deeper on the four apps betting on it.

The voices that disappoint, and why
Nectar AI lists voice calls, and independent testing clocked 3 to 5 seconds of latency per exchange. That is not a call. That is a walkie-talkie with a bad connection.
Secret Desires AI is the only app here offering genuine voice cloning, confirmed by two separate reviewers, which is a real feature rather than the vague “voice chat” everyone else claims. Then structured testing scored the output 2.8 out of 5, describing the voices as rushed and short on emotional range. Interesting mechanism, unconvincing result.
OurDream AI renders some of the best images in the category and one of the flattest voices: monotone, behind Candy.ai. Candy.ai itself picks voices by timbre, from soft to bold, and modulates with the tone of the exchange, but one reviewer put it plainly as robotic next to Kupid AI.
Replika has offered voice for years and remains fine for a warm daily exchange. It is the wrong pick if intimacy is the goal. The app removed adult content in February 2023 under regulatory pressure, the partial rollback covered legacy accounts only, and in practice the model pivots to asking about your day the moment you steer anywhere near it.
Character.AI gives you voice calls for free on an enormous library, and a content filter that cuts scenes off without warning. Fine for personalities, useless for anything else.
How to test a voice before you pay
- Listen to three registers, not one. A greeting, something teasing, something calmer. Any engine sounds good on a single friendly line. The variation is where they separate.
- Check whether voice is on the free tier at all. Nomi’s is not. Kupid’s own table says its is not. Character.AI and Replika both have genuinely usable free tiers with voice.
- Time one minute and price it. On FantasyGF that minute is 30 of your 100 monthly tokens. On Promptchan a call is 2 Gems, but only on the $33.99 plan.
- Decide which product you want. Audio clips and live calls are not the same purchase, and half the confusion in this category comes from pricing pages that use both words for the same feature.
Bottom line
For the best-sounding voice, Kupid AI, on annual billing, never weekly, and knowing you are buying messages rather than calls. For unlimited live calls attached to a character that still remembers you in three months, Nomi, which is also the only one here that does not meter the minutes. For writing the voice yourself instead of picking from a list, Kindroid, if you accept paying before hearing it. For a face on the screen rather than a voice in your ear, FlirtCam.
And before any of that: go press play on a free tier. Character.AI and Replika both let you hear a call today, for nothing, which is enough to work out whether voice is the feature you would actually keep paying for.
