Free vs paid AI companions: what you actually get
Where the paywall sits in this category, which limits matter, and when free is genuinely enough.

Almost every app in our ranking has a free tier. Very few are usable beyond a few days, and the reasons differ.
Where the paywall sits
- Message volume. The most common limit: a daily quota, then a wait.
- Memory. Several apps reserve long-term memory for subscribers, which quietly makes the free tier a different product.
- Voice and images. Almost always paid, and often metered on top of the subscription.
- Response speed. Free users get queued at peak hours.
When free is genuinely enough
Character.AI is the clearest case: the free tier gives you the library and decent conversation, and the subscription mostly removes the queues. If you want variety rather than depth, you may never need to pay.
Replika and Paradot also offer free tiers that allow an honest week-long evaluation.
When free is only a demo
Nomi and Kindroid are the opposite. Their free tiers exist to show you what you are missing. Budget the first month as the real cost of evaluating.
The thing to watch
Credits metered on top of a subscription are the pattern to watch: the advertised price is not the price paid. Work out what a heavy week costs before committing to a year.
