Best AI Roleplay App for iOS: What Apple Actually Lets You Install
Apple bans explicit content, so every roleplay app on the App Store is filtered. What really installs on an iPhone, and the two-tap Safari workaround.

- guide
Search “best AI roleplay app iOS” and every listicle skips the rule that decides your options. Apple reviews each build before it ships, and its guidelines exclude overtly sexual and pornographic material. Everything on the App Store went through that gate and passed.
So the honest answer splits in two. There are good roleplay apps on the App Store. None of them is the unfiltered version of anything.
In short
- Character.AI and Replika: real iOS apps, both filtered, both fine for story-driven roleplay.
- Nomi and Kindroid: the strongest iOS ratings we found (4.6 and 4.8), and an adult register their reviews document in full.
- No sideloading on iPhone. The Android APK escape hatch does not exist here.
- Safari installs a site in two taps: Share, then Add to Home Screen. That is how Nastia AI and SpicyChat AI get onto your phone.
What Apple’s App Store rules actually ban
Apple’s guidelines rule out “overtly sexual or pornographic material”. They do not ban adult themes wholesale. Every roundup flattens that distinction, and it explains everything you will find.
An app can carry a 17+ rating, ship suggestive art, and sell romance. Promptchan does exactly that: its iOS app is free, rated 17+, and scores 4.2 out of 5 across more than 800 ratings. What it cannot do is match what the website produces. The verdict on its own app is flat: the web stays the reference copy, and App Store rules will not let the app catch up.
That is the pattern everywhere. A store listing is not a promise about the product, only proof that a reviewer at Apple found nothing breaking the rule.
One wrinkle worth pocketing: the company publishing the app is not always the company in the terms. Promptchan’s iOS app is published by AI Research Group Limited, while its terms name VisionAI Labs Limited in Dublin. Not a red flag. Just not the same name.
What you can actually install on an iPhone today

Plenty, if you want story-driven roleplay rather than an adult product.
Character.AI has the largest library in the category, millions of community-published characters, free to browse. It is also the strictest filter we test, and 2026 has been one long tightening. Six waves since September 2025, in order: Disney sent a cease and desist over Marvel and Star Wars bots in September, NBC and DreamWorks followed, and thousands of licensed characters vanished. November brought a separate model for minors and open chat closed to under-18s after lawsuits tied to teenage suicides. March 2026 capped swipes and retries on free accounts and layered ads on top. April 2026 added age verification by face scan at signup. SimilarWeb measured roughly 29% fewer monthly active users across the period.
The filter cuts mid-sentence, and not only on adult material: violence and several dramatic registers trigger the same interruption. Plan around it, or pick something else.
Replika ships mature apps on both iOS and Android, with a 3D avatar and an AR mode nobody else matches. Its adult register went in February 2023, and ordinary romantic roleplay went with it. A study published in Socius measured the fallout: 59% of users felt the app had lost its core function, 16% described real emotional distress. It has not come back. At $19.99 a month it is also the highest monthly price we list. Come for the avatar, not for romance.
Talkie is the odd one out: mobile only, no web version at all. The art direction is the most polished in the category and the first week is fun. Then the gacha takes over, the 40 to 50 second video ads arrive, and companions start forgetting your name mid-sentence. Its filter is strict and, worse, inconsistent: the same phrasing passes one day and triggers a warning the next.
Paradot lists iOS and runs the memory system we rate highest, inspectable and correctable line by line, at $39.99 a year. On adult content it is a flat no, by design.
No sideloading on iPhone, unlike Android
Here iOS and Android genuinely diverge, which is why our Android guide reads differently.
On Android, an app that skips Google Play can still hand you an APK. SpicyChat AI does exactly that: no listing in either store, an earlier Android app pulled, and free users pointed at a manual APK install. Whatever you think of a file Google never reviewed, the door exists.
On iPhone it does not. An APK is an Android package and will not run. Apple’s alternative marketplaces opened in the EU under the Digital Markets Act, but they are region-locked, they carry their own review, and no companion app here ships through one. Assume the App Store is the only store you have.
Which leaves one route, and it beats the workaround it replaces.
Two taps in Safari: how Nastia AI and SpicyChat get onto your home screen
Open the site in Safari. Tap the Share button. Tap Add to Home Screen. Done.
You get an icon on your springboard, a full-screen app with no browser chrome, and a saved login. No download, no review process, no store account. Plus one thing the App Store never gives you: iOS lets you rename the icon before you add it. A store app carries its published name forever. A web app carries whatever you type.
Nastia AI built its distribution on this. No store listing anywhere, a PWA you install yourself, and the reason stated openly: no uncensored app survives store policy for long without censoring itself. In exchange, a French operator (Nastia Cybernetics, company number 982046385), conversation export, and a free tier with no card. Its ceiling is memory: 40 entries, roughly two weeks of recall.
SpicyChat AI works the same way from Safari. Around 300,000 community characters, adult content live from signup with no toggle to hunt for, and text that never runs on a credit meter at any tier. The free tier caps at roughly 100 messages a day, replies included, so budget about 50 real exchanges. Its flaw mirrors Nastia’s: memory decays after 15 to 20 messages and rarely survives between sessions, even at $23.95 a month.
CrushOn AI earns the third slot for written roleplay. Its free tier went from 100 messages a month to 50 a day in April 2026, roughly 1,500 a month, and Standard runs $5.99 for 200 a day.
What a native app buys you, and what it costs you

Be fair to the native build. It is not only a filtered copy.
Push notifications are the real one. A home-screen web app gets them on modern iOS, but only once added, and patchier. Voice is the second: Nomi’s in-house V3 engine adds laughter, sighs and breathing, and paid tiers include unlimited calls, which runs better as a proper app than a browser tab. Widgets and Live Activities are native by definition, since a web page cannot draw on your lock screen. Ratings are the third, and a real signal: Kindroid sits at 4.8 on iOS, Nomi at 4.6 across roughly 2,200.
What it costs you is the filter, permanently. No setting, no unlock, no adult tier changes what Apple approved.
One line of lucidity before you turn notifications on. A message from a character who “missed you while you were out” is a scheduled job firing against a template. Nomi’s version, Proactive Messaging, is at least opt-in. Keep the badge count from running your evening.
Apple’s cut is in the price you pay in-app
Apple takes a commission on in-app purchases: 30% as standard, dropping to 15% after the first year of a subscription and for Small Business Program members. Publishers do not absorb that quietly.
So compare before you tap. Every price in our reviews is a web price: Nomi at $15.99 monthly, $39.99 quarterly (about $13.33 a month) or $99.99 a year (about $8.33). Nastia AI at $11.99, or $7.33 on annual billing. CrushOn AI at $5.99 for Standard, annual saving around 30%. If the number inside the app is higher, you now know why. Subscribe on the web, then sign in on the app.
Refunds follow the same split. Buy through Apple and you use Apple’s process; buy on the site and the publisher’s terms apply. Promptchan, for instance, allows refunds within 30 days provided you have not made significant use of the service, and rules out crypto payments entirely.
Nomi, Kindroid, Promptchan: which one for which kind of roleplay
| App | On the App Store | Adult register | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | Yes | None, and the filter is tightening | $9.99/mo, free tier |
| Replika | Yes | Removed in 2023, not returning | $19.99/mo, free tier |
| Nomi | Yes, 4.6 across ~2,200 ratings | Unfiltered, no toggle to flip | $15.99/mo, limited free tier |
| Kindroid | Yes, 4.8 on iOS | Unfiltered, and you write the directives | $13.99/mo, no free tier |
| Promptchan | Yes, free, rated 17+ | Unfiltered on the web, not in the app | $14.99/mo, free Gem allowance |
| Talkie | Yes, mobile only | Filtered and inconsistent | $6.99/mo, free tier |
| Nastia AI | No, PWA from Safari | Uncensored, strongest traits paid | $11.99/mo, free, no card |
| SpicyChat AI | No, web from Safari | Live from signup, no toggle | $4.95/mo, ~100 msgs/day free |
Reading it straight: Nomi if you want it to remember you months later. Kindroid if writing the backstory and the response directives yourself is part of the fun, and if you accept paying a month to evaluate, since there is no real free tier. Images there can take up to 7 minutes each. Promptchan if you came to build scenes rather than talk, at roughly 2 Gems an image and 18 a video.
For where each app draws its line, our uncensored companions guide goes app by app.
What people ask before installing
Is there an uncensored AI roleplay app on the App Store? No. Not one that behaves like its web version. Apps rated 17+ exist, and some are excellent, but the explicit tier lives on the site.
Can I sideload an APK on my iPhone? No. APK is an Android format. It will not install, and no tool makes it install.
Does Character.AI have an NSFW mode? No, and it is not a setting waiting to be found. The filter is structural, and it interrupts non-adult registers too.
Cheapest way to test without paying? Three free tiers, no card: CrushOn AI at 50 messages a day, SpicyChat AI at roughly 100, Nastia AI on a daily quota.
Is a home-screen web app worse? For chat, memory and images, no. For notifications, voice calls and widgets, yes.
The bottom line
Want a real app? Take Nomi or Kindroid for depth, Character.AI for the catalogue if the filter does not matter to you, Replika if the 3D avatar is the draw. Those ratings are earned.
Want the unfiltered version? Stop searching the App Store. Open Nastia AI, SpicyChat AI or CrushOn AI in Safari, tap Share, tap Add to Home Screen, and you have the same icon on the same screen running the copy Apple never got to review. All three start free, none asks for a card to let you judge, and one evening tells you which one you would actually pay for.
