The number that sets the tone
2.8 out of 5 on Google Play. Across our panel of apps, that is the lowest public rating. The reasons repeat: you cannot send a message without paying, weekly subscriptions have replaced monthly ones at higher prices, hard caps everywhere.
What genuinely works
“The variety of characters is insane” is the most common piece of praise, and it is earned. The Chai community is widely judged more creative than Character.AI’s despite being thirty-five times smaller. When you land on a good bot, you get a real session out of it.
The problem is memory
This is failure number one, cited everywhere. Context decays on long conversations, there is no memory across characters, and relationship state resets between sessions. You start from zero every time.
Adult content
No platform-level filter, but no guarantee either: it depends entirely on which community bot you open. Some are explicitly uncensored, others were written with their own guardrails. Reviewers land on “lightly moderated” rather than genuinely free, and you only find out after you start.
The free tier in 2026
15 to 40 messages a day. Premium at $13.99 a month for unlimited. There is a $30 tier that reviewers say does little more than the $14 one.
Veterans from 2023-2024 have one refrain: “it used to be free, it is not any more”. That is the single most common complaint, and it explains the rating.
Verdict
A decent mobile time-killer if you accept the bot-quality lottery and starting over every session. For a relationship that builds, nearly everything else in the ranking does better.
